Alice Lutz

Alice Lorraine (Opp) Lutz 85, of Coeur d'Alene, ID, passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at Hospice of North Idaho. She was born in Isabel, South Dakota, on July 17, 1931 to Fred and Rose (Himmreich) Opp. She lived in and around Isabel most of her life, attended Isabel public school and graduated in 1949.

On May 22, 1949, she married Arnold (Shorty) Lutz, in Isabel, SD. They raised sheep and cattle on a ranch north of Isabel. In 1958 Shorty and Alice left the farm and moved to Isabel. In 1976, she and Shorty divorced and in September 1978 she married Harold Locken.

As a wife, mother, and homemaker, she enjoyed cooking, sewing, and crocheting. She occasionally worked outside of the home but her true passion was her life on the farm with Harold raising bum lambs, riding horses and driving big "White". She was a loud fan at sporting events supporting her children, participated in community plays and many other activities. She lived her life through her children and wrote, “You have taken me to college and around the world. I sang in congregations and nursed the sick. I flew jet airplanes and walked along prison corridors. Your love has eased my pain and carried me through the dark places often.” Her grandchildren were the highlight of her life and she often cared for them at some time or other. She entertained them with wild stories, instigated pranks, took them fishing and enriched them with so many wonderful adventures.

Alice is survived by her sons, Arnold (Barb) of Cheyenne, WY, John (Laurie) of Pinehurst, NC, Hal (LeeAnna) of Riceville, TN; daughters, Della (Terry) Moore of Spokane, WA, and Marta (Rob) Urbaniak of Coeur d'Alene, ID; eleven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren; sisters, Elsie Myhre, Gladys Gay, and Lorraine Griffis . She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Arnold and Harold, brothers Alvin, Albert, Edward and Herman Opp; sisters Hilda Schroeder, Alma Stadel, Martha Scholl, Leona Nemrava, and Esther Whitney.
