Alvin D. Smith, 75
Alvin D. Smith passed away peacefully on March 2, 2017, following a lengthy illness.
Al was born Oct. 11, 1941, in Simpsonville, S.C. He was the ninth and youngest child born to William Dewey Smith and Carrie Malissa Fowler.
Al began playing drums in the fall of 1958 with a local band, “The Moods,” from Luling, Texas, during his senior year in high school. He was the original drummer for the group. Now known as “The Original Moods,” the band semi-retired this past New Year’s Eve after playing for dances for 58 years. Al and his wife, Emily, enjoyed traveling in their RV to Texas to their winter home where Al would be asked to play drums and sing once again with the group; music being one of his great passions.
After graduation from high school, Al enlisted in the Air Force. He was stationed at Lackland AFB, Texas, Keesler AFB, Miss., Sidi Slimmane AFB, Morocco, Seigelbach and Zweibrucken, Germany, and Crystal Springs AF Station, Miss. He served four years and eight months in the military.
His multifaceted professional career began in 1964 working with the University of Mississippi Medical Center in electronics. Then between 1966-1967 he was hired at Ingalls Shipbuilding Corp in electrical/electronics. Between 1967-1979, he worked for the Mississippi Highway Patrol as a Computer Programmer and then Zinsco Electrical Products. In 1979, he joined Dresser Industrial Valve as a Programming Manager and I/T Manager and then in 1985 became Manager I/T & NA Operations with Dresser Masoneilan. In 1992, he moved to Spring, Texas, where he worked with three companies; Daniel Electric as a Manager I/T & Manufacturing Support, Baan Corp as a Consultant; Regional Accounts Manager, and later, Ariba Corp, as a Program Manager with Multiple Major Software Companies. After some time spent in Independent Consulting and working semi-retired and commuting from Hayden, Idaho, to Anaheim, Calif., he decided he wanted to stay home with his lovely wife, so he took a position in another field as a Jail Technician at the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department where he retired in 2010 after five years so he and his wife could travel in their RV.
He is survived by his loving wife, best friend and patient caregiver, Emily, at their home; three step sons, Ryan Yocom, Jeff and Marina Yocom; and daughter Aleska, and Marc Yocom; besides two biological children from a former marriage.
Al was a well-rounded, intelligent, honest, professional; objective in all things. He had a marvelous sense of humor, and he made friends easily everywhere he went that he kept for life. He was a Christian man with a love for the Lord from an early age and for his great niece, Kendal, whom he simply adored. Wife, Emily, added he was always mild mannered, soft-spoken and gracious; just a sincere, loving southern gentleman. His absence will leave a hole in the hearts of many left behind.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 10, 2017, at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
