Darlene Dee Prater, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, & friend, passed away peacefully on January 21st, 2025, at the Hospice House of North Idaho, surrounded by family and friends.
Born on December 21st, 1945, in Ashland OR, to Lawrence “Buster” & Fern Rametes & grew up alongside her two brothers, Larry & Bill.
Darlene was a proud graduate of Gilcrest High School, class of 1964. Shortly after high school Darlene married Jay Prater. Together they welcomed two daughters, Lynn & Lena. The family moved to St. Maries, ID where they built their home, made many friends & lasting memories while raising their daughters. Though their marriage later ended in divorce, Darlene’s love for her family remained steadfast.
After relocating to Coeur d’ Alene, ID, Darlene found companionship with Les Slife & together they created many treasured experiences, enjoying NASCAR, fishing, bowling, & traveling until his passing in 2018.
A pharmacy tech by trade, Darlene worked with devotion for many years at several establishments including Mikes Drug, Jack's Pharmacy, Shopko Pharmacy, & Medicine Man before retiring.
Her passions extended far beyond her career. Darlene was an avid bowler, engaging in leagues for over 57 years & serving both president & vice president positions. In recognition of her dedication and talent, she was honored with the induction into the Greater Coeur d’ Alene USBC Hall of Fame in 2024. Darlene was also a long-standing member of the Eagles, both communities which she considered extended family.
Darlene found immense joy in spending time outdoors, whether that be at the family river lot, fishing, or hunting. One highlight being the memorable day she shot her moose alongside her father. She enjoyed crocheting, diamond painting, and could often be found playing BINGO, listening to live music by Steve, & spending time with her adored dog, Chica.
Darlene cherished her friendships deeply. Often referring to her best friends as sisters. Together they traveled often, a favorite being the Oregon Coast, creating countless memories filled with laughter and joy.
Darlene is survived by her two daughters, Lynn(Donny) Masterson, Lena(Shaun) McLeod, brother Larry Rametes, and her legacy lives on through her seven grandchildren, Amanda (Tim) Boyett, Josh (Alyssa) Masterson, Connor (Rabekka) McLeod, Marlee (Tanner) Lewis, Nate (Kate) Masterson, Matthew (Bethan) Masterson, and Brea (Audie) Johnson, as well as nine great-grandchildren: Kaylynn, Lydia, Everett, Garrett, Maeve, Ryker, Mila, Nova, and Koda
Though her earthly presence may be gone, Darlene’s generous spunky spirit, steadfast faith, and boundless love for family & friends will endure, cherished in the hearts of many and echoed in the laughter and stories shared together.
