Dave’s Life:
Dave was born March 25, 1948 in Chicago. They lived the first 2 years with his Mom’s parents in Chicago, then the next 2 years with his Dad’s parents in Blue Island. They then bought a house in Homewood, where Dave grew up. His sister Janet was born in 1953.
Dave spent time playing with the neighborhood kids, riding bikes, building forts, playing games and exploring. He attended elementary, junior high and high school in the Homewood area. He later attended Utah State University for 2 years. Although he got good grades, he mostly hated being confined in school, wishing to be outside seeking adventure. While growing up, Dave played organized or pickup baseball, football, basketball, ice hockey, golf, swimming, and tennis. He made a few baseball all star teams, and he really wanted to be a professional baseball player. And just one thing kept him from achieving that goal, he simply wasn’t good enough.
In 1969, Dave married Betty and they had 3 kids, Michael, Marilyn and Michelle. He loved those kids, and enjoyed taking them to the beach, camping, hiking, going on trips and playing ball. Betty and Dave were married almost 19 years, then divorced. In 1988, he married Judy. They were married 26 years, then divorced. In 2015, he met Candy and they were together until the end. Together, they had so much fun taking walks, going to the beach, and taking trips to Chicago, Hawaii, Canada and throughout the western US. They spent a lot of time laughing. Despite the ALS Dave was suffering from, Candy made his last few years fun and enjoyable. She was his girlfriend, companion and caregiver.
Dave worked in a paint factory and for Western Electric Company in Illinois before moving to Coeur d’ Alene in 1973. Here, he worked 5 seasons for the US Forest Service, working throughout the forest from Hayden to the Montana line. He then worked all or part of 28 years in logging, mostly as a timber faller. Logging jobs he worked were from the Canadian border to the Montana line to Potlatch on the south to Porcupine Bay in Washington. Dave loved logging and falling trees, although there were times, being tired, sore, cold or hot, that he wished he was home sleeping. The last years of his working life were spent working for Kootenai County Weed Control, Circling Raven Golf Course, Adams County Weed Control and the Cd’A School District in weed control. He had especially fond memories of Adams County, where he was their department superintendent for 7 years.
Dave’s favorite fun things to do over the years were hunting, fishing, camping, hiking (especially into mountain lakes), golfing, organized softball, working in the yard, going to beaches and swimming, going on vacations to new areas, watching sports on TV, and visiting with family and friends.
Dave wanted to thank all his family and friends for making his life so interesting and so much fun. And he wants everyone to not be sad over his passing away. He is finally free of the prison that ALS had him in.
“Love you all, and I wish you the very best.”
Dave
