Dorothy MacPhee
Dorothy Madeline MacPhee (nee Seney) died on March 10, 2017. She was born on April 3, 1921 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to John Howard Seney and Charlotte Hickson Seney. Dorothy was the youngest of the four Seney children. A series of crop failures in the mid-1920s cost the Seney family their farm and led them to Vancouver, BC. During the Great Depression, Dorothy left high school to help support her family by working as an elevator operator and as a teller at the Royal Bank of Canada.
Dorothy’s brother Sam arranged for her to meet Craig MacPhee, a student at the University of British Columbia and later an officer in the Canadian Navy. In 1942 Dorothy rode a troop train across Canada to wed Craig at Halifax, Nova Scotia. Their first son, Craig Robert, was born there in 1944. After the war, Craig and Dorothy returned to Vancouver, where Craig earned his bachelor and master degrees while Dorothy supported the family. Sons John Angus (1946) and Glen Alan (1949) were born in Vancouver. In 1949 the young family moved to Seattle, where Craig earned his doctorate while Dorothy worked at the UW College of Business.
In 1954 the family moved to Cheney, where Craig taught at Eastern Washington University. Dorothy continued working as a secretary while raising her three boys. In 1957 they moved to Moscow, where Craig became a professor at the University of Idaho and Dorothy worked in the university administration. Dorothy also managed rental properties that the MacPhees developed. In 1968 Dorothy earned her bachelor’s degree in education. During the 1979-80 academic year the couple worked in Taiwan, where Dorothy taught English classes.
Craig and Dorothy retired to a house on Lake Coeur d’Alene in 1981. In retirement Dorothy sailed on the family’s racing boat, volunteered at Kootenai Medical Center, served her community through Beta Sigma Phi, and enjoyed spending time with her sons, their families, and many friends. The couple wintered in Yuma, AZ and made several international tours. In 2012, Craig and Dorothy celebrated their 70th wedding Anniversary. Craig died later that year.
Dorothy is survived by her sons Craig Robert (Andrea) of Indian Wells, CA, John (Carol) of Coeur d’Alene, and Glen (Deborah) of Rathdrum. She also leaves nine grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and seven nieces and nephews in Canada. Dorothy was a role model to her family. All will miss her class, dignity, and sparkling sense of humor.
The MacPhee family plans a memorial celebration of Dorothy’s life this summer. Graveside Inurnment will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday March 18, 2017, at the Riverview Cemetery, 1001 Lincoln Way, Coeur d’Alene, ID.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Craig and Dorothy Seney MacPhee Undergraduate Fishery Endowment at the University of Idaho Foundation, 875 Perimeter Drive MS3143, Moscow, ID 83843-3143.
