Edward Hatcher, Jr.
Edward Wallace Hatcher Jr., 61, our beloved son, husband, stepfather and brother, passed away unexpectedly on Jan. 25, 2018, at his home in Coeur d’Alene. He was born on March 29, 1956, in Spokane, Wash., to Edward Sr. and Joan Hatcher, their only son and lifelong “big brother” to his three younger sisters, Faith, Edna and Elaine.
He grew up in Chattaroy, Wash. until his family moved to Chewelah when he was a teen. He moved to Spokane his senior year and graduated from Shadle Park High School in 1974. He returned to Chewelah to work at ALCOA shortly thereafter, working his way up the corporate ladder to a senior leadership position as sales manager. During this time he also worked as a volunteer firefighter. He retired in 2004 when the facility closed and started a heavy equipment construction business that he operated until his second retirement in 2015.
He was previously married to Barbara Fleck and helped her raise her five children, Roxanne Wickwaard, Ron Fleck, Jim Fleck, Beth Sorenson and Charlie Fleck, in Chewelah, Wash. In 1996 he married Beth Austin and added her three daughters, Jen Chaney, Kelley Rasmussen and Hailey Austin to his life.
Throughout his life Ed was adored by his family, immersing himself in their many activities. He continued that tradition with his grandchildren as Papa Ed, never missing an athletic event or school function. Summers were spent boating on Lake Coeur d’Alene with Beth in their cabin cruiser, towing an assortment of tubing kids all over the lake. He loved to hunt and fish and was happiest exploring the forests, lakes and rivers of the Northwest, always regaling family and friends with his hilarious stories along the way.
He and Beth loved to travel, and made memorable trips to Mexico and Hawaii in recent years. Ed never met a stranger and was the first to step in to help with any project, as there was nothing he couldn’t repair. He was the life of every get-together, serving as its master chef and bartender. He was bigger than life itself, an adventurer in every aspect, whether he was piloting a boat through the Inland Passage to Alaska or deep sea fishing off the Oregon Coast. He will be greatly missed by all who ever had the pleasure to know him. May you rest in peace, Big Ed.
He is survived by his mother, Joan Gibson (Hatcher) of Spokane; his wife, Beth Hatcher; his sisters, Edna (Dan) Moore of Moses Lake, Wash., Elaine Willis and Faith Boblick of Spokane, two nephews, Danny and Jacob; three nieces, Jennifer, Shannon and Kelley; three great nieces; two great-nephews; eight step-children; 23 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Feb. 24, 2018, at the Coeur d’Alene Eagles, 209 E. Sherman Ave. The family invites you to gather afterward to honor Ed and to celebrate a special life that was very well lived.
