Elizabeth Mary Anderson – 99
Liz Anderson, 99, passed away Friday, December 29, 2017, at Hospice House of North Idaho. She was born on February 20, 1918 on her parents’ homestead at Twin Beaches. The seventh of eight children of Albin and Mary Ann Barker Anderson, she grew up on Valhalla Point on Lake Coeur d’Alene. She attended Kidd Island School and was always fond of the annual reunions.
Liz received her education degree from Eastern Washington University and advanced degree in education for the deaf in Arizona. She spent most of her teaching career in the state of Washington in Battle Ground and the Spokane area. She particularly loved the time she spent in Morocco teaching at the US Air Force Base. When duty called during World War II, Liz developed and used her love of flying to work as a contractor for the war effort at the air force test facility near Boise, Idaho. Liz was a private pilot, learning to fly at the Coeur d’Alene Airfield which was located at the current fair grounds site.
Liz was an avid gardener and spent many hours in her garden near the home she built herself on Everwell Bay, and was a faithful member of the Mica Flats Grange. She was always passionate about education and loved talking about the history surrounding Coeur d’Alene and her many special students through the years. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Florence (Ned) Mooney, Earnest (Alice) Anderson, Henry (Clara) Anderson, Nancy Mae Larson (Henry), Louie Anderson, Allen Anderson (Inez), Harold Anderson and her nephew David Larson. She is survived by several nieces, nephews, and many great nieces and nephews. A date for a family gathering will be scheduled at a future date. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Mica Flats Scholarship Fund, 7465 W. Kidd Island Road, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho 83814.
