Frank Paul Schmidt, 90

Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 30, 2017, at St. Pius X Catholic Church.

Frank Paul Schmidt, 90, died Aug. 21, 2017, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

He was born Oct. 9, 1926, to Ludvina and Paul Schmidt in Roscoe, S.D., where he attended grade school and high school. Frank joined the U.S. Army in 1944 and served in the Korean War. He was discharged in 1946.

Soon after returning from the war, Frank married Pearl Stuckel on Nov. 25, 1946, in Roscoe. The couple moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1947. Their marriage produced six children, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Frank and his first family spent most of their time together on small farms near Coeur d’Alene and St. Maries, raising livestock and growing abundant gardens. Frank and Pearl divorced in 1972.

Frank worked at the Navy Depot in Spokane Valley, and soon after joined Kaiser Aluminum where he retired after 37 years of employment as a Hydraulic Specialist. He was a member of the local Steelworkers Union, the VFW and the American Legion.

On Oct. 19, 1974, Frank married Johnna Morgan. Johnna was a school teacher in Post Falls. They moved to a small farm near Priest River, Idaho. Here, they pursued what many would call a “back-to-the-earth” lifestyle on their farm, resplendent with their log house, beautiful forests and green pastures. Both continued their jobs “down South” while commuting that long distance to their farm. After a few years, they relocated to yet another “hobby” farm near Post Falls. There, they lived happily raising all manner of livestock, growing a large garden, and most of all…enjoying the grandchildren. Always nearby in their comfortable home were their well-fed and well-loved pets. Especially Coco-Bee, Frank’s little lap pup.

Sadly, Johnna passed away in 2005. Soon after, Frank sold the farm and moved to Bestland Retirement Apartments in Coeur d’Alene where he spent the remainder of his life. He considered this place to be his home, blessed with the loving attention of caring staff members and the many friendships with his fellow residents.

Surviving Frank are his first wife, Pearl and their six children, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, one sister, one brother, several sisters-in-law, several brothers-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.

Please join the family for a reception at the Parish Hall following the graveside service.
