Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, Grace LaVada Mae (Hoffman) Boughton, passed from our lives on January 23, 2025, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
Grace was born December 9, 1928 to Fred and Helene Hoffman in Brush, Colorado. Early on, Fred moved the family between Iowa and various western states to pursue work. Grace was only 8 when her mom passed away in California. They returned to Iowa, where Grace and her siblings were raised by their grandmother, father, extended family, and mostly by each other.
After high school, Grace wed Lowell Boughton and followed him across the globe through his Air Force career, from Japan to Florida, and North Dakota to Texas. Along the way, they adopted four children: Billy, Christina, Jimmy, and Mary Ann. Though always ready to “move on” at the dictates of military life, Grace created a loving home for the family at each new location. When Lowell retired, they moved to Coeur d’Alene to be near Grace’s sisters, Rosie and Enie, where they raised their children on a ranch at the foot of Best Hill. Life was filled with fishing, hunting, gardening, extended family gatherings, road trips, and memorable adventures to Jan Lake. Once empty nesters, Grace and Lowell became snowbirds in Arizona. For nearly two decades, they enjoyed winter warmth with their daughters, grandkids, friends and family from the Midwest, card games, and waffle parties.
Grace lost Lowell in 2016. After his passing, she lived independently in her home for nearly 10 years. As she aged, she met every day with grace and joy. Mary Ann, her husband Paul, and Christina visited daily, and when asked how she was doing, Grace would always answer, “Just great!”. Throughout her life, she loved, served, and supported her family, church, and community. We are grateful for the grace she gave us and the lessons about living a positive and enduring life.
She was awaited in heaven by her husband, Lowell; her parents, Fred and Helen; her sons, Billy and Jimmy; and her brothers and sister, Kenny, Dean, Frankie, Bob, and Enie.
She is survived by her daughters, Christina and Mary Ann (Paul); her grandchildren, Melissa (Nick), Nathan, David (Rachael), Katie, Robert, and Monica; her great-granddaughters, Jordan and Kierra; and her sister, Rosie (Hoffman) Cheney.
