John Criswell passed away Oct. 20, 2016, at his home in Post Falls, Idaho, due to cancer. He was born in Wewoka, Okla., to J.T. and Paulyne Criswell.
John attended grade school at Centerview in Pottowatomie County, Okla., and graduated from Prague High School. John married his childhood sweetheart, Nancy Ann Marsh, on Oct. 26, 1956, and they began a long and fruitful marriage.
John was a proud graduate of Oklahoma State University, earning a B.S. in forestry. Additionally, he received his real estate appraiser’s license after completing graduate programs at the University of Missouri, Southern Methodist University and the University of San Francisco. He then began a successful 33-year career with the United States Forest Service that included assignments in Blue River, Ore., Willow Springs, Mo., Reno, Nev., Ogden, Utah, and Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, from 1961-1994. His last position was as Director of Lands, Minerals and Recreation on the Idaho Panhandle National Forest. Upon retirement, he decided to remain in Post Falls.
John was a man of varied interests. He was well read, enjoyed gardening and the outdoors and had a passion for sports. He was a successful coach in many sports, particularly football, and served as an excellent role model and mentor to a couple of generations of young athletes. He also believed in being a servant to the communities he lived in and was active in many areas of the Post Falls Lions Club. John was a staunch supporter of education and had a particular passion for the Lions Club scholarship programs.
John was a devoted husband and father and will be forever missed by his wife and family. He is survived by his wife, Nancy, of the family home in Post Falls; sons Herk Criswell (Itxaso) of Winnemucca, Nev., Jay Criswell of Troutman, N.C., and Jim Criswell of Post Falls, Idaho. He is also survived by his brothers Paul Criswell (Sharon) of Wautoma, Wis., Ted Criswell of Seminole, Okla., and Jim T. Criswell (Angela) of Stillwater, Okla.; as well as grandchildren Jon Patxi Criswell (Rochelle), Amaya Monasterio (Ben) and Joseba Criswell; and great-grandson Gaizka Criswell.
