Judith C. Gardipe Cady (Granny)

Born March 12, 1927, went to Heaven November 4, 2017

Judy was born in Mills, WY to Nora Conger and Russell Mullen, the fourth of seven children. After her father died of cancer when she was nine years old, she was raised by her beloved grandmother Minnie D. (Nanny) and Grandpa Bill Parks in Arlee, MT. She was a cheerleader in high school because of her good grades. During WWII when many of the boys had enlisted, she wrote to several of them, including Joseph Gardipe Jr. and they married in 1945 after he returned home. They lived in several places on the Flathead Reservation until 1954 when they moved to Spokane, WA. They bought their home in Rathdrum, ID to accommodate their large family of seven children, and lived there until Dad retired in 1982.

Our Mom was an amazing woman. She was the kindest person we knew. She was generous, stubborn, determined, resourceful, and the most loving person we have ever known. We brought her home on Oct. 27, 2017 to spend her final days visiting with family & friends. It was a wonderful 'last weekend' with her. We as a family have vowed to keep her memory alive, just as we have our Dad's, by keeping up with our tradition of family reunions.

Our Mom worked out of the home from 1958 until Dad retired. She cooked for many years at the original Templin's in Coeur d'Alene, ID. Customers loved her and would come in and ask if Judy was cooking. They followed her when she went to work at Tony's and later to Sargent's.

Mom lived her faith. Our family became members of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in 1960. She was a member of the Altar Society from 1960-1983, serving as president for two years and was State Treasurer for ICCW Convention in 1981. After moving to Blanchard, ID in 1985, she became involved in the Blanchard Community Church.

Our mother was a mom, homemaker, great cook, master gardener, seamstress, quilter, cake decorator and teapot collector. Her collection of teapots was well-known in the area. We all have a quilt made by Mom. When a new baby was on the way, she was building a new quilt. Her flowers were displayed at church. She always had a pot of something on the stove and cookies in the cookie jar. No family member or friend was ever turned away from her door. There was always someone living with us when we grew up because Mom & Dad helped those in need.

Dad loved to travel and gave Mom the bug. They went to many National Parks and took a trip back East to see her brother and his family, whom she hadn't seen in many years. They took in the sights of New York City, the Statue of Liberty and other attractions. Mom would say, 'How are we going to pay for this?' Dad would respond, 'We're going and we'll figure it out when we get back'. She loved Alaska and made a number of trips there while Warren and his family lived there. She traveled to Florida three times while Luana lived there. She made a number of trips around the country to see Wes as he worked in radio and moved several times over the years. Wes gave her access to several country stars and she was star struck. She loved showing off her pictures with them.

After Dad retired, they traveled to Arizona each fall. They hiked the desert trails and visited many of the ruins in the area. They bought their retirement home in Blanchard in 1985. Dad died suddenly of a heart attack in May 1987.

In 1989, Mom was reunited with an old family friend by their children and married Wallace (Bus) Cady. They loved working in the yard and traveling to see family. Bus passed away in 1994. In 2000, Mom was reunited with her son Walter Lane. He and his family were welcomed into our family. In 2002 she was given a trip to Ireland by her children. She traveled there with Wes and commented many times that it was her ‘trip of a lifetime.’

Our Mom absolutely loved her family, especially the grandkids and babies. She was ‘Granny” to us all.

Judy was preceded in death by both of her husbands and her six siblings. She is survived by her children; Luana Jo (Dwight), Karen Claire (Fred), Janet Heaton (Ken, deceased), Edith Crow, Warren Gardipe, Wendell Gardipe (Kathy), Wesley Gardipe, and Walter Lane (Mikki). Her 25 grandchildren; Robin Miller, Shawna Pederson, Kelly Pederson, Mitsy Chester, Dina Hastings, Cari Jones, Darrel Rosco, Wendy Rosco, Kenny Heaton, Kevin Heaton, Troy Tomblin, Joseph Todd Gardipe, John Crow, Pete Crow, Tracy Barton, Monica Dibble, David Barkdull, Kristina Taylor, Mandy Gardipe, Jamie Gardipe, Caitlyn Gardipe, Carly Gardipe, and Jory Phillips. She also had 46 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great grandchildren.

Her 'Celebration of Life' will be held at the Blanchard Community Church on Dec. 2, 2017 at 1 PM. A reception will follow. Her internment will be on Memorial Day weekend 2018 in St. Ignatius, MT next to her husband of 42 years, Joseph Gardipe, Jr. We miss her already!
