Shirley Chaney

Shirley May Chaney, 94, died peacefully in her sleep on September 2, 2017, at Schneidmiller Hospice House of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Shirley was the only child born to Nat W. (Bill) and Lola V. (McCallum) Farrior on September 22, 1922 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She grew up in Council Bluffs, and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1940. Shirley attended Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa and she received a diploma from Van Sant School of Business, Omaha, Nebraska. On March 7, 1944 she married Duane H. Chaney in Walterboro, South Carolina just before he left for WWII. They had 65 wonderful years together, had three beautiful children, and lived in Council Bluffs until their retirement. Shirley’s first job was at Jennie Edmundson Hospital. As a young mother, she continued her career at First Federal Savings and Loan, Association. When she retired after 27 years, she had worked there longer than any other employee. After retirement, Shirley and Duane lived in Sublette, Kansas; Buena Vista, Colorado; and they settled in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho to live near family. They spent winters in Casa Grande, Arizona, and Moncks Corner, South Carolina.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Duane. She is survived by her children: son Douglas of Coeur d’Alene; daughter Linda and her husband Tim Bedal also of Coeur d’Alene; and daughter Barbara Chaney and her husband Bill Wingen of LaCrosse, Wisconsin. She is also survived by grandchildren Shari (Bruce) Trout of Hayden, Idaho; Paula (Ernie) Valdez of Longmont, Colorado; Lisa (Chris) Hatcher of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Joseph and Jarred Chaney of Omak, Washington. Also surviving are great-grandchildren: Jake Toews, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Kate Toews, Clinton, Missouri; Colten Valdez, Longmont, Colorado; Hayden, Wyatt, and Shelby Hatcher, Council Bluffs, Iowa.

A close family friend perfectly described Shirley: “She was the kindest person I ever met. She never had a mean bone in her body or an evil thought.” We love you Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, and your loving smile will be missed by us all.
