Steven Thomas Kopke was born in Boise, Idaho on February 18th, 1958 to Frederick and Emma Suzanne Kopke. He entered into eternal rest on November 4th, 2017, surrounded by loved ones, after a 15-month battle with cancer.
Steven’s family on both sides have a long history in Boise, as his Great-Great Grandfather David Gekeler homesteaded in Boise in the 1870s. His ancestry sparked a strong interest and appreciation for the history of the great State of Idaho and for family heritage.
Steven graduated from Boise High School in 1976 (Go Braves!). He attended the University of Idaho where he studied Architecture. He was member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. While at U of I, he was employed by the University of Idaho Facilities Department and went on to create a successful career in the hospitality arena, notably with the Marriott Corporation and Starwood Hotels & Resorts.
Steven served for several years on the College of Art and Architecture advisory board. His profound gift to the University of Idaho was his massive effort in working with university alumni, students, faculty and staff to restore the college of Art and Architecture in 2005. The University of Idaho Administration had dissolved the College of Art and Architecture in 2002 and Steven worked tirelessly for more than two years to galvanize alumni, raise funds and argue for the restoration, renewal and revitalization of the College. Steven and his dedicated alumni friends created an on-line foundation in support of their efforts. He had a strong, personal passion towards The College and its original concept of collaborative, multi-disciplinary, design based, education for Architects, Landscape Architects, Artists, and Graphic Designers. He believed in the importance of this institution, its rich history, and its impact on the great State of Idaho. He was very proud when, in October of 2005, the Moscow-Pullman Daily News read, “ Cheers greet return of UI Art and Architecture . ” He will be long remembered as a remarkable leader by those who served with him in this memorable effort.
You didn’t need to spend much time around Steven to understand that faith, family and University of Idaho (Go Vandals!) were three things that were very important to him. He spoke often and fondly of his ”hot wife”, each of his children, grand-children and all of their accomplishments.
Steven's passion for people, his appreciation of history, and his love for architecture and design led him to pursue his latest career in real estate. He had a special way of networking with everyone he met, assessing the needs of those he worked with, acknowledging their stories and aligning each individual with the right opportunity or perfect property.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Lyssa Kopke, their five children, daughters Kaila (David) Mallrie of Hayden, ID; Marjorie (Gabriel) Hern of Roseville, CA; Elizabeth (CJ) Hoye of Pasco WA; sons John Kopke of Roseville CA; and Benjamin Kopke of Spokane WA. As well as nine amazing grandchildren; Emma Mallrie, Tate Mallrie, Nora Mallrie, Lety Hern, Parker Hern, William Hern, Graham Hern, Quinn Hern and Houston Hoye. He is also survived by his mother, Emma Suzanne Tate Kopke of Boise, ID; brothers Richard (Janet) Kopke of Oklahoma City, OK; David Kopke of San Diego, CA; sister Carolyn Kopke of Boise, ID and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his father, Frederick Kopke.
There will be a “Celebration of Life” on Saturday, November 25th, 2017 at 1PM at Lake City Community Church in Coeur d’Alene. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice of North Idaho.
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelations 21:4
