Virgil McAnally

Virgil McAnally passed from this life February 10, 2017, and is now in the presence of Jesus our Lord. Virgil was born June 1, 1930 in Englewood, Colorado. He spent time as a boy on a ranch in Colorado. Later he moved to Pasadena, California where he met and married his wife Nancy, to whom he was married for 66 years. They lived in California, Arizona, and Alaska, but ultimately called Coeur d’Alene home. Virgil is survived by his wife, Nancy, their children: Kathy and Paul Campbell, Cory and Dan English, Ken and Karen McAnally, and Carolyn and Ken Carlson. His grandchildren include Andrew, Matthew, Hannah, Marnie, Mamie, Joanna, Joel, Kenny, Grace, Carlin, and Jed. His great grandchildren number 24 (so far!)

Virgil was known locally for his abiding love of Jesus and knowledge of Scripture. He served as Pastor in several local churches, and in the years following he continued his role as a Bible teacher, leader, and mentor to new Christians. He and Nancy have been devoted to missionary work, and served God through giving and praying, as well as welcoming young missionaries into their home to learn about their work and encourage them in their ministry.

Most of those who knew Virgil will remember him as their Pastor/Teacher, but he had several other jobs and careers. He served in the Air Force as an airplane mechanic, later trained as a machinist, and owned two businesses. In 1962, he owned and operated a Shell service station on east Sherman Avenue. Nearing retirement, he worked with his son, Ken McAnally, doing auto repair at Ken’s Seventh Street Garage.

Although he and Nancy started their family young, Virgil went on to complete nearly 7 years of college while also working full-time. Initially Virgil studied to become a teacher of Mathematics. After coming to know the Lord, he changed his focus and ultimately got his degree at Arizona Bible College in Phoenix, Arizona. He was ordained in 1967.

Virgil’s first call was as Associate Pastor at Bethel Baptist Church in Coeur d’Alene, where he later served as Senior Pastor. He also served at Community Bible Chapel in Spokane and Hayden Bible Fellowship in Hayden Lake. Concurrent to his time at Bethel Baptist Church, he was instrumental in a ministry to young people who were known at the time as ‘Jesus People,’ and helped to establish a coffee-house ministry, ‘Antioch House’ in mid-town Coeur d’Alene in the mid-1970s. Several of the young people who came to know Jesus through this ministry later went into Christian service themselves.

Virgil loved Jesus, Nancy and his family . . . hot Starbuck’s coffee, the outdoors, salsa, cherry pie and Rustler’s Roost. . . old hymns, reading, cartoons, Johnny Cash, being early, and telling the stories of his life!

He is preceded in death only by his parents and one grandson, Matthew, who called him “Daddy Grandpa.” Daddy, we miss you already, but rejoice for you as you see the face of God. We will see you again.

A Memorial Service will be held at Coeur d’Alene Bible Church at 1:00 pm, February 25, 2017.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hayden Bible Church Building Fund or Hospice of North Idaho.
