Wayne Lee Baxter, 92, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, passed away on January 7th, 2020, at Hospice House, surrounded by family and friends.
Wayne was born on Jun 25th, 1927, in Donnelly, Alberta, Canada, to Angelo R. and Effie L. (Reynolds) Baxter. The family moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, in 1932 and eventually purchased and operated a dairy farm in the French Gulch area. Wayne attended the one-room school house located in French Gulch, which educated students from grades one through eight, before moving to Coeur d’Alene High School, where he played football.
Wayne married the love of his life, Lois Barton, on March 21, 1953, in Coeur d’Alene, and together they raised their family and established many lifelong friendships.
Wayne had a passion for the outdoors. He loved animals and even had a pet black bear named Tumbler for a few years. He loved fishing and spent many hours with friends chasing the next great catch. Later in life, Wayne traveled the neighborhood feeding treats to all the dogs he encountered and visiting with the person behind the leash.
Wayne spent the vast majority of his working years in the mining industry, with the last 30 plus at the Sunshine Mine where he ultimately became the shaft foreman. He loved the industry and his fellow workers.
Wayne was preceded in death by his wife Lois, and his parents Angelo and Effie, and his sister Lorrene Messerly. He is survived by his sons Mark (Patty Humpherys) and Dave, and daughters Judy Baxter, Connie Arney and Pam Tippets, along with nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Wayne will forever be remembered for his kindness, generosity, love of animals, his deep love for his family, and being the best playdate his children and grandchildren could ever want.
The family wants to thank Marvin Taylor for being a true friend to dad and for all his support during Wayne’s final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be made to Hospice House North Idaho, 2290 W. Prairie, Hayden, ID 83815. A celebration of Wayne’s life will be held later this spring.
